International Interchanges

In response to transformations in the international environment, TBA began actively engaged in international interchanges after the 1970s to assist the government in promoting citizen diplomacy by organizing various exchange events and activities such as calling members to attend The Law Association For Asia And The Pacific (LAWASIA). The 15th board of directors adopted the resolution for appointed TBA delegates to visit bar associations of countries which do not have official ties with Taiwan to enhance citizen diplomacy and make known the rule of law and legal system in Taiwan. During the 1980s, TBA held interchanges with the Seoul Bar Association, Gwangiu Bar Association, New York City Bar Association, Daini Tokyo Bar Association and the Johannesburg Bar and signed an interchange agreement with the Seoul Bar Association.

3 February 1996 - Regular interchange with Okinawa Advocates Union, a sister association of TBA.

20 June 2009 - International Forum on the System of Legal Practice in Taiwan, Japan and Korea.

After the 1990s, with the globalization in all aspects, professional organizations need to operate with international perspective in order to establish cross-border cooperation to access and integrate information. Since the signing of the interchange agreement with the Okinawa Bar Association in 1994, TBA has actively built friendly relationships with the bar associations in various cities around the world. As of 2018, TBA has entered into alliances with 14 foreign Bar Associations and Law Societies. In addition, TBA has joined several international law-related NGOs; for instance, TBA joined the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) in July 2001 and became actively involved in the international affairs concerning human rights protection.

Furthermore, the interactions among Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Mainland China became more frequent than ever since 2008. In addition to actively maintaining friendly exchange of visits and participating in various city forums, TBA has signed friendship agreements with the Bar Associations and Law Societies in China. The objective is to guide the TBA members into the cross-strait as well as international legal service market and to broaden the members' perspective.

11 January 2011 - TBA signed the interchange agreement with The Hong Kong Law Society.

2020.2.6 TBA signed a cooperation agreement with the Paris Bar.
2021.3.4 TBA joined International Bar Association (IBA) as a Sustaining Member Organization.
2021.6.16 TBA signed an agreement with the Czech Bar Association.
2023.5.8 TBA and the Association of Mongolian Advocates renewed the friendship agreement.
2024.3.4 TBA signed a friendship agreement with the Kumamoto Bar Association of Japan.
2024.3.30 TBA signed a friendship agreement with the Los Angeles County Bar Association of U.S.A.
