Article 1 of the Lawyers Act provides: "Lawyers shall take as their mission the protection of human rights, the realization of social justice, and the promotion of democracy and rule of law." "Based on the aforementioned mission, lawyers shall, in the spirit of self-discipline and self-governance, perform their duties with integrity, maintain social order, and improve the legal system." Based on this mission and philosophy, Taipei Bar Association has for many years promoted the development of association affairs under the principle of "doing practical work internally and having a voice externally." Internally, in addition to continuously promoting in-service training for members to enhance their professional capabilities and improve the quality of their legal services, the association has also improved the investigative organization and efficiency for handling member ethics and disciplinary cases to strengthen the association's self-discipline and self-governance.
Externally, the association combines the collective wisdom and strength of its members, and based on the principles of autonomy, self-governance, and self-discipline, actively promotes various human rights protection work and holds forums on human rights issues. Furthermore, Taipei Bar Association has formed alliances with relevant domestic organizations and actively participates in various reforms of the nation's political, social, and judicial systems, as well as legislative amendments, to promote democracy and rule of law. In addition, the Taipei Bar Association has long participated in legal aid and pro bono legal services, and cares for disadvantaged groups to realize social justice. To thoroughly implement the above mission and philosophy, Taipei Bar Association also actively participates in the revision of the Lawyers Act to improve the lawyer system and the legal practice environment, thereby ensuring that modern attorneys can properly fulfill their functions.
